It’s never too late to start getting fit. A mixture of exercise and healthy diet is often the best recipe to a healthier you.

However, it’s not just what you eat and how long you exercise that helps you lose weight and get fit; it’s also when you eat and what exercises you do that increases your fitness levels and helps you lose weight quickly.

Here are some quick tips to getting fit:

Have breakfast when you wake up. If you’re the kind that works out in the morning, then grab a half-cup of Quaker oatmeal, a banana or something light to give you a burst of energy before you start. Breakfast keeps you feeling full and satisfied in the mornings, lessening your chances of overeating later through the day.

If you’re looking for energy to last you through the day, switch to complex carbohydrates such as oats, fruits, vegetables and legumes (think lentils and peas). Avoid sugary treats like soft drinks as they provide a spike of energy that’s unhealthy for you.

Keep active throughout the day. Even if you don’t have an exercise regime to follow, just keep moving for at least 30 minutes a day, especially if your day entails you sitting a lot for long periods.
